八重山 — Yaeyama

八重山は、石垣島を中心に、竹富島、小浜島、黒島、新城島（上地島・下地島）、西表島、由布島、鳩間島、そして日本最南端の有人島・波照間島など、石西礁湖周辺の島々と、日本最西端の与那国島を含む、十二の有人島と多くの無人島からなる島嶼群です。

同じ文化圏にありながら、
それぞれの島には独自の芸能、祭祀、信仰が今も息づいています。

世界中から訪れる人々が、

Yaeyama

The Yaeyama Islands are an archipelago centered on Ishigaki Island and including Taketomi, Kohama, Kuroshima, Aragusuku (Kamiji and Shimoji), Iriomote, Yubu, Hatoma, and Hateruma—the southernmost inhabited island in Japan—along with Yonaguni, the westernmost island of the country.

Together they form a group of twelve inhabited islands and many uninhabited ones.

Although they share a common cultural sphere, each island maintains its own traditions of performing arts, rituals, and beliefs.

Visitors from around the world often express their surprise:
“I never imagined such a place existed.”

The Inspiration Behind TORIMOJI

One of the visual inspirations for TORIMOJI comes from an ancient Japanese talisman called Kumano Goō Hōfu, issued by the Kumano shrines in Wakayama for hundreds of years.

This sacred paper charm is created from many stylized crows. When arranged together, the birds form mysterious patterns that look almost like writing.

In Japanese mythology, the crow is considered a sacred messenger of the gods.

Inspired by this tradition of forming symbols from birds, TORIMOJI explores a contemporary interpretation — creating new characters from the shapes and movements of birds.
