藍 — Indigo

鳥文字は、このデザインから始まりました。
妻の名前である「藍」を型染めにしてみようと思い立ち、何度も試行錯誤を重ねて完成させた図案です。

そこから次々とアイディアが生まれ、
鳥文字は現在のシリーズへと育っていきました。

なぜ鳥なのか。
八重山には季節ごとに多くの渡り鳥が立ち寄ります。
その声を聞くと、また新しい季節が巡ってきたことを知るのです。

いつもどこかで鳥の声がしている。
そんな島なのです。

Indigo

Torimoji began with this design.

I first thought of turning the character for Ai (Indigo)—my wife’s name—into a stencil-dyed motif. After many trials and adjustments, the design finally took shape.

From there, new ideas kept emerging, and Torimoji gradually grew into the series it is today.

Why birds?

Many migratory birds stop in Yaeyama as the seasons change.
When their voices are heard, people know that a new season has arrived.

Somewhere on these islands, birds are always singing.

熊野牛王神符からインスピレーションを得たオリジナルの「鳥文字」

マシマタケシがデザインし、型紙を切り、布用絵の後で彩色した手作りのTシャツです。

The Inspiration Behind TORIMOJI

One of the visual inspirations for TORIMOJI comes from an ancient Japanese talisman called Kumano Goō Hōfu, issued by the Kumano shrines in Wakayama for hundreds of years.

This sacred paper charm is created from many stylized crows. When arranged together, the birds form mysterious patterns that look almost like writing.

In Japanese mythology, the crow is considered a sacred messenger of the gods.

Inspired by this tradition of forming symbols from birds, TORIMOJI explores a contemporary interpretation — creating new characters from the shapes and movements of birds.
