型染めの絵柄は、このように型紙をカッターで切り抜いて作ります。

最初は手描きで描いた線ですが、カッターを運んでいくうちに、線は少しずつ簡素化されていきます。

その過程で生まれる、素朴で揺らぎのある線が、型染めならではの味わいになります。

切り抜いた型紙には、紗（しゃ）と呼ばれる細かな網を接着して補強します。

こうして型紙は、布に模様を染めるための版として完成します。

Making the Stencil

The design for katazome is created by cutting a stencil by hand with a knife.

The lines begin as hand-drawn sketches, but as the knife moves along them, they gradually become simpler.

Through this process, the lines gain a natural irregularity and quiet character—one of the unique qualities of katazome.

After cutting, a fine mesh called sha is attached to the stencil for reinforcement.

The stencil is then ready to be used as a printing plate for dyeing patterns onto fabric.
